The Story of how the Baghdad Bait Shop came to be:
E
arly in 2007 (nobody documented the exact date) Scott and Angie were scheduled to do an interview with a local Albany, Oregon soldier stationed at Camp Liberty in Baghdad, Iraq. The soldier in charge of radio contacts at that time, Sergent Rick Lewis, informed us that our interview was currently unavailable because he was out fishing. According to Sergent Lewis, Camp Liberty was in the vicinity of many of Saddam Hussein's man-made lakes that were chalk full of fish. Upon further inquiry, Scott and Angie learned that only a handful of soldiers had access to fishing gear, leaving many to watch with envy as those with gear were able to get away from "the job" for a few hours with a pole and a tackle box. During the brief conversation with Sergent Lewis, Scott and Angie vowed to get fishing gear to Camp Liberty, some way, some how. The way: KRKT listeners heard the call, and started dropping off gear by the boat loads. Scio, Oregon post office employees offered their services in packaging and shipping the gear. By the end of 2007, a half dozen shipments had been sent to Baghdad full of Grandpa's old gear, new gear purchased in town, sinkers, weights, poles, tackle boxes, nets, and one pocket fisherman.
Next Shipment:
In September, the town of Scio, the Scio post office, and KRKT sent off a shipment that cost more than $700 to ship. On October 21st, KRKT, Coastal Farm and Ranch, and dozens of volunteers had a packing party and sent 42 boxes of golf supplies to the new "Camp Falcon Pro Shop." Thank you for all of the donations for shipping...we came in under budget...just barely! On December 3rd, the Christmas Shipment went out to the Baghdad Bait shop complete with Christmas tree, Bows of Holly, and 1100 freeze dried Ice Cream bars from Oregon Freeze Dry. Stay tuned for confirmation of delivery.
How to donate:
We are always accepting donations of recreational gear (fishing, sports, games, movies, etc.) as well as money for shipping costs. Donations can be dropped off at the KRKT studios, 2840 Marion Street in Albany...or at the Scio Post office in Scio Oregon.
